In 1960, Nixon lost the election to John Kennedy. Two years later, he lost in a bid to be Governor of California. Nixon and most experts thought it was the end. "But as I leave you, I want you to know, just think how much you're going to be missing...you're not going to have Nixon to kick around anymore." Remarkably, six years later, he became the Republican nominee for president and went on to defeat Hubert Humphrey to become the 37th president of the United States.
